Cea Serin biography
CEA SERIN is a mercurial metal band that utilizes the various sounds from around the world to construct a unique and invigorating musical environment for those interested in an in-depth and cerebral union. Taking the age old formula of heavy guitars and bass and adding in drum sounds that encompass genres of all types, CEA SERIN assimilates new age and other eclectic keyboard nuances to further highten their metal delivery. With an emphasis on lyrics, the vocals must compliment the subtle changes in mood with constant fluctuations in timbre, pitch, style, velocity and passion. CEA SERIN has a debut album out now under the Heavencross Records label in Europe.

4 stars Cea Serin were formed in 1997 by vocalist/bassist/keyboardist Jay Lamm and guitarist Keith Warman, with influences as diverse as Carcass, Cradle of Filth, Sarah McLachlan and Yanni, very much in the prog metal area but coming at it slightly differently to many. They released their debut album, 'Where Memories Combine' in 2004, but then there was nothing for a long time. In 2014 Lamm and Warman were back, this time with a full-time drummer in Rory Faciane. This release was to act as a bridge between the old and the new, with re-recordings of two songs from the long- unavailable Chiaroscuro demo, a Sarah McLachlan cover ("Ice") and then two new songs including a 20-minute epic. If this was supposed to be the lead-in to the next album then we are still waiting, as this is currently the most recent release from the band.

To my mind, that is a real shame, as this band really are concentrating on both words in the term prog metal. When they set off, they really do, and there is no doubt the importance of Carcass in their musical background, but the same band then provides a power ballad arrangement of Sarah McLachlan, I mean, really? The thing is they all work really well, it is just hard to realise they are all the work of the same band. The newer material is more thoughtful, bombastic and epic than the earlier songs, with Faciane making a real impact with some very strong work in the backline indeed. This is a powerful prog metal act, and I can only hope that given there were ten years between albums when this appeared, that there is more to come as I would certainly like to hear it.

4 stars US band CEA SERIN was formed back in 1997, and following some initial demo productions, they released their debut album "Where Memories Combine" in 2004, an outing that was met with a lot of interest and acclaim from reviewers and fans alike. Then the band disappeared, their promised second album becoming something of a progressive metal vaporware item, bordering a mythological entity. Talked about and anticipated, if it ever should appear. Come 2014 and the band unexpectedly reappears, releasing their second album "The Vibrant Sound of Bliss and Decay" through the fledgling German label Generation Prog Records.

Cea Serin has returned following a ten year long hiatus with a second studio album that should build quite nicely upon their reputation as a high-quality progressive metal band. Tight, quirky and vibrant progressive metal, unafraid to include whatever the musicians desire, be it compelling power metal galloping sequences, more aggressive thrash metal escapades or, indeed, a ballad penned by Sarah MacLachlan. A production that merits a check by those with a general interest in progressive metal, and especially those with a taste for a vintage variety, adventurous take on the genre.

4 stars Finally!10 years after the blistering debut album,CEA SERIN is back with another release, which proves thet we have to be patient, because sometimes miracles are happening in music too!Definitelly, this amazing come back album is quite unexpected and that's trully fantastic! With the pretentious and suggestive title THE VIBRANT SOUND OF BLISS AND DECAY,our beloved American band is back in business and they are doing this in big style!Definitelly, there are plenty of magical moments on the album, there are moments of pure delightmend and enchantment, old and new CEA SERIN fans will be spoiled to hear again the magic of their beloved band! This unique CEA CERIN sound, with moments of melancholy and deception, then some unbelievble complex musical arrangements-all the ingredients are present on this superbe album!I can consider there is a major improvement compared to the impressive debut album, under all terms-musical concept, performance, complexity and musical ideas-everything is at a superior level!ICE-for example,is one of the most sensitive and melancholic compositions I've ever heared-superbe piano work and great atmosphere! The monster 20 minutes track-WHAT FALLS AWAY-is the culmination of musical inspiration for CEA CERIN-it's an unbelieveble complex and complete composition-all the ingredients of a pure prog metal composition are present!Definitelly,a masterpiece itself! The vocal performance could be a little better, but it fits perfectly well with the musical message of this impressive -that's true! The production is very good too, much better than on the first album, the crystal clear sound of all instruments is impressive too!I like also the art cover-very nice and intelligent too!Overall,a great comeback album, something like a fresh breath in today's complicated prog metal world-and the prove that diamonds are eternal,in music too!4.5 stars for a true great piece of pure art!

Where Memories Combine

4 stars The literal meaning of cea serin is "what you are all about". Cea Serin uses this phrase to describe the mission they take in their music. Cea Serin's goal is to create progressive metal that captures what a human life is all about. Some of the unique elements to Cea Serin's sound are not there for music, but for emotional purposes.

Cea Serin's debut release "Where Memories Combine" is their epic "The Surface of All Things" (first four tracks) along with a shorter epic "The Scripted Sufferring" (next two tracks), and the bonus track "An Evening at the Suicide Cafe". "The Surface of All Things" is a unique composition. It's meant to be a journey through the human mind, and the different shades of vocal styles and the digitally mastered segues do just that. Cea Serin attempts to forge an intimate experience with the listener, and they succeed in doing just that.

Jay Lamm is the creative force behind this band. He plays bass, vocalizes, composes the digital drums, and records the atmospheric and lead keyboards. Lamm is also the composer. So how does the busy guy perform? His vocal abilties are extraordinary, he has so many different ways that he can attack a listener with his passion. He has the cleanest screams a listener could desire. His screams are the perfect musical expression of agony. They are realistic musical screams, not death metal styled screams. His clean voice is dramatic, adding a sense of depression to the music. Jay Lamm vocal contribution is by far his greatest performing contribution to the album. Lamm's vocal performance on the epic "The Surface of All Things" is one of the most complete vocal performances in progressive metal.

Lamm's keyboards are quite creative as well. Lamm is a master at switching from ambient atmospheric tones to lead analog tones when the whole band kicks in. The bonus track "An Evening at the Suicide Cafe" is a good mix between atmospheric and lead keyboards with an industrial yet jazzy timbre.

Lamm's bass playing doens't leave much to speak of. It's a groove performance, but it's hard to be considered a great groove agent when a bassist is playing to digital drums.

The digital drums composed by Lamm are among the best, but the only problem is that they are digital. One of the few negative aspects to this album.

Keith Warman is an excellent lead guitarist. Warman can hold and bend notes with great sustain. He uses the upper register of the next extensively with screaming melodies and precise lead work. There's some creative work with hand and pick slides throughout the album. Warman's lead work is the perfect instrumental compliment to Lamm's diverse vocal style.

Forrest Osterman is the rythymn guitarist. There's some punchy guitar rythymns but nothing to overpowering. The chordal structure isn't the most imaginative, but complimenting Keith Warman's range Osterman manages to build a wall of sound with his guitar tracks.

The production is good for such an obscure band. The digital drums are better than most, but many of us, myself included don't care for the digital drum splat. The guitars have strong tones that are just delicate enough to please a listener's ear. The vocals have excellent mixing. The effects are noticeable, but the variety of voices is.

Highly reccomended for fans of progressive metal searching for creative and artistic bands that break away from the genre's standard approach.

*The track list varies per label release. Heavencross and Nightmare Records include different bonus tracks on different continents.*
