He plays a more jazz-based style of djent that differs from much of the modern djent scene. He released his debut full length album, Cosmogensis, in 2010. Gru is heavily influenced by artists such as Fredrik THORDENDAL, Allan HOLDSWORTH, TOOL, DREAM THEATER, CYNIC, and other progressive metal artists.

Gru Progressive Metal

Review by ssmarcus

2 stars I am genuinely surprised at the extent to which I do not connect to this record. Gru's Cosmogenesis definitely has a reputation as one of the best earliest examples of bedroom instrumental djent. However, when comparing the music here to that of other bedroom djent gods like David Maxim Micic, Chimp Spanner, and early Intervals, I find this record fails to define its own unique character, instead opting for that generic spacey ambience sound employed by countless other instrumental djent acts throughout the decade.

Admittedly, I only hopped onto the djent bandwagon fairly late in 2016 and am only getting to this specific record in 2020 despite it being a classic of the genre from early on. Perhaps I would feel that it was those aforementioned groups that lacked distinct character if I had listened to Gru first. Be that as it may, I won't deny Gru's truly cosmic technical guitar chops. I suspect that had he stuck around and churned out some more records Gru would have developed his sound and produced some more well-rounded progressive metal.

3 stars A one-man explosion of meaty, hard-edged djent instrumentals, Gru's Cosmogenesis showcases Piotrek Gruszka's advanced skills as a crafter of fine cheese-free progressive metal compositions. The guitar dominated album is a brief but welcome burst of creativity which Gru actually released for free, and whilst there's a certain extent to which it leans a little heavy on the technical showboating it's still consistently entertaining enough to be worth a try, especially since it's a free download. If that running time is any indication of Piotrek's restraint and self-editing, I have to say I wish more progressive metal musicians were as disciplined as he is, because he's able to pack more fun into 34 minutes than some acts are able to accomplish in twice that time. A fairly decent middle-of-the-road entry in the djent boom.

5 stars 'Cosmogenesis' - Gru (9/10)

It's rather amazing to hear what one man is able to do with his guitar. While it's true that Polish act is not alone in being one of a great many one-man bands in the rather new scene of 'djent' progressive metal, I have to say that there are few that sound so tight and proficient as this. The work of Piotrek Gruszka, Gru has not appeared to have received much well-deserved recognition since the release of this debut in 2010. It's a shame really, because "Cosmogenesis" stands out as being one of the best instrumental prog metal albums I have heard in recent years. An uplifting grab bag of atmosphere, rhythmic experimentation, and beautiful melody, this short album only leaves me wanting more.

The first thing that stands out on "Cosmogenesis" are the production standards, which are remarkably high for an independent effort. Although the drums are programmed- a gripe I often contend with listening to one-man projects- it is engineered with precision and technical proficiency that I don't often see, even in many of the better known artists. Of course, Piotrek's guitar wizardry is the primary focus of Gru. An entirely instrumental record, "Cosmogenesis" is dominated by his axework. On paper, I would have imagined that this formula would entail a 'virtuoso' approach to the music, where the performance is meant to demonstrate the extent of his skill as a musician. I was only half-right to believe this; although the music never relents in its complexity, Gruszka proves himself through a great variety of techniques. More often than not, Gru impresses not through his leads and 'solos', but rather in his ability to craft vast soundscapes and rhythms with his work. It's as intense and technical a listen as I could hope for in a one-man act, but it never sounds narcissistic.

Animals As Leaders is likely the closest thing I could compare Gru to. Like Tosin Abasi, Piotrek Gruszka works many of his riffs around rhythm. Although odd time signatures are a core element of much progressive metal, this 'djent' (so named after the trademark Meshuggah-derived palm-mute) sound focuses more on creating a very complex, almost hypnotic rhythm. As the opening riff of "Nebula" testifies, Gruszka creates some compelling rhythms that will twist a listener's mind as they attempt to decipher it. On the other end of the spectrum, Gru's lead playing is often very melodic and beautiful. Shredding is often tossed in exchange for jazz-infused glory.

At only 34 minutes, "Cosmogenesis" is a fairly short album when compared to the 'average' nowadays. It does work in the album's favour however; the music is consistent in its challenge, and I'm not sure I would have liked the album so much if I had been bombarded with a full hour's worth of carnage. Suffice to say, Gru deserves a much greater deal of recognition than he has thus far. Cerebral rhythms, tight musicianship, and a futuristic atmosphere make "Cosmogenesis" among the very best djent albums I have ever heard.

Gru Progressive Metal

Review by Machine Messiah

5 stars Gru is an (at this time) unknown one man project from Poland. Cosmogenesis is the debut 34 minute instrumental album featuring a mixture of djent and fusion - very melodic. It reminds me a bit of Animals As Leaders, Chimp Spanner, or Scale The Summit (reference points) and is a very easy/catchy listen that had me hooked after about the third time through (all tracks are very good). At this time there is no physical copy of the album, but Piotrek Gruszka (Mr. Gru) has made the album available for free download through the following site: got-djent.com/release/cosmogenesis, or you can listen to the whole thing at grumusic.bandcamp.com. I hope more people check this album out - after all, it's free!
