Hellhaven biography
HELLHAVEN are a Polish progressive rock/metal band, formed in Myslenice in 2008 by Jakub WEGRZYN (lead guitar/synthesizer/backing vocals) and Marcin JASKOWIEC (bass). At the beginning they were inspired by bands in heavy metal or hard rock genres. This period, for the band members, was a quest to find their own sound, an idea for future music and creation of a strong and solid group backbone. The time from 2008 and 2009 was used to create their first work, but it was never officially published. In 2009 the band started to work on their first EP album. After 12 months of writing their own original music in 2010 the band, using their own financial expenses, created the mini-album ''Art for Art's Sake''. The record was a concept album which music could be described as a combination of progressive metal and heavy metal music styles. The 25th of December 2010 is not only the official date of publishing the mini-album but also the day of their debut on the music stage. The debut record was positively received both by critics and by fans and was presented on Polish radio and had successes in music festivals and magazines.

With the start of 2011 the band decided to start their work on a more complex music material for the second long play record. During that time the band signed a contract with German record label Legacy Records which allowed them more creative and technical possibilities. In 2012, after 12 months of creating new music material, the band registered more than 50 minutes of music dubbed progressive rock/art rock in Lynx Music studio. In October of 2012 premiere of a record single took place promoting long play record ''Beyond the Frontier''. Tracks which appeared on the record were 'Paper Swan' and 'About Reading and Writing'. ''Beyond the Frontier'' was released in December 2012. Further to WEGRZYN and JASKOWIEC, the other band members are Sebastian NAJDER (lead vocals, since 2009), Maciej DUNIN-BORKOWSKI (guitar, since 2011) and Konrad WÓJTOWICZ (drums, since 2011). Past members of the band include Bartosz ZACZEK (guitar, 2008-2009), Lukasz ZDEB (lead vocals, 2008-2009), Dawid MIKA (guitar, 2009-2011) and Radoslaw SUDER (drums, 2008-2011).

The band cite influences such as KING CRIMSON, PINK FLOYD, QUEEN, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, MIKE OLDFIELD and IRON MAIDEN, with a focus on creating an original sound.

4 stars Exaggerated promotion? This may be your decision in the end. The record label comes with the statement 'Each track leads the listener towards a different part of music. It is not possible to unambiguously label this with any single music style'. We will see. Okay, soon I will have a try anyhow regarding the latter statement. This is another heavy progressive rock album which some time ago appeared on my radar screen with a bang. HELLHAVEN are enriching the progressive rock scene, at least when it comes to Poland. The band members know how to rock the house in a catchy melodic manner. And due to diversity, and some weirdness on top of it, I would say that it would be somewhat short-sighted, if you will reduce this one to a pure prog metal album.

A compact song structure is featured, missing any focus on overburdening solo activity. Based on that they are fusing diverse styles, instruments and other resources to an unpredictable brew which is really challenging. First of all Sebastian Najder's expressive vocal appearance should be noted. This surely is conspicious, showing a range from charming to growling. He partially acts in a way ... well, I'm wondering if he may need new vocal chords each time the studio recordings were finished or a tour has been completed. Maybe for one or two it will be overmuch, it's a special trademark anyhow. Otherwise, musicianship is top-notch in general, and so there's not anything which should discourage to have a try anyway.

If there is any story assigned to that affair - the title track probably sees them leaving Mother Earth, at least spiritually, where the song next to last returns the trip's essence when coming back: heaven is not differing! Well, a free style interpretation, I must admit. But both songs are my favourites too, this is much more meaningful maybe. And in between you will be invited to take the rollercoaster. Polka here, Raga there, female vocals, trumpet, samples, scratches aso, everything skillfully embedded with heart and mind. Terrific album, excellent find, as it was with Abstrakt's Limbosis album in a similar way!

4 stars My first impression of this is that it is a harder, heavier version of Golden Earring's early period - up to and including Moontan - and that for me is not a bad thing as Golden Earring is a band that I love a great deal other than for many of their later albums. The similarity is most apparent in the vocal delivery style of Sebastian Najder which is very good.

The band's name is a weak point as far as I'm concerned. The name "Hellhaven" had me anticipating a standard Heavy Metal outfit and that is far from the truth in fact. The band state that they are focussing on being an art - metal band however I see this as more prog melodic hard rock than metal.

There is a lot of drama going on in the music as well as in the subject matter and the music touches part of me that loves melody and the dramatic. The musicianship is good throughout.

Relating to this there is just something missing as far as I'm concerned - it is good but there is nothing that stands up and shouts greatness. No weak points but no real musical giant statements either. If you are a lover of Golden Earring's earlier period (which I am) then this will give you a lot of pleasure. If you enjoy "Riverside" then by all means get hold of this album. Essentially, for me, this is a three and a half star album and due to the fact that it did take me back to one of the all time greats in rock music I will add the half star in order to allow for four stars.

3 stars In their debut album, the Polish art rock/metallers Hellhaven try to escape from the norm of modern progressive metal and, in some ways, achieve it.

Beyond the Frontier shows a band that is not afraid of experimenting, blending both typical and weird melodies with unconventional progressive passages. The music ranges somewhere between heavy art prog and progressive metal, most reminiscent of acts like Riverside and Pain of Salvation, utilising a plethora of low-tempo clean-guitar riffs and heavy breaks resembling to Black Symphony. The main difference with the aforementioned acts is that Hellhaven inject very theatrical elements to their music, from horror themes to operatic vocals, sometimes with more success than others. They also use movie samples and backing vocals to create their atmosphere, which at times approaches the post rock style.

The slightly-accented and, at times, exaggerated vocal lines may alienate the listener, but at the same time violins and horror-whispers may attract others. This is not a conventional mix whatsoever. Plenty of moods within the same track, plenty of ups and downs, boring moments interchange with inspired melodies and so on... This inconsistency does not help in making the album memorable but there are elements here that show big promise for a future release.

Best moments: Beyond the Frontier, Traum of Mr Twain Part 2
