Dan Lorenzo formed the band in January 1978 and named it after a pseudonym he ascribed to himself in 9th grade, "Dan from Hades", while taking a mythology class. In March of that same year, the band started playing shows in Paramus, NJ by showcasing cover versions of Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, KISS, The Knack and Ted Nugent. In 1982, Hades opened up for Twisted Sister at The Soap Factory. They also recorded and released the single Deliver Us From Evil. In 1983, the band started playing the NJ & NY club scenes. Later in 1983 and in early 1984, Hades made compilation appearances on Metal Blade's Metal Massacre VI and Megaforce's Born to Metalize. In 1985, Tecchio, LePage and Schulman joined the band and released the 1986 single "The Cross" / "Widow's Mite". In 1987, Hades signed a deal with Torrid Records, which released their debut, Resisting Success, the same year. In 1988, their second album If at First You Don´t Succeed was released with new lead guitarist Ed Fuhrman. During May and June 1989, Hades embarked upon a European tour that was quite unsatisfying for the band, which had them playing at small venues and ultimately built up internal
