Хелена Михальсен заслужила большую популярность у слушателей тяжелой музыки участием в группах «Trail of Tears» и «Sahara Dust» (ныне «Epica»). Начав свою музыкальную карьеру на большой метал cцене со ставангерской группой «Trail of Tears», и приняв участие в записи их дебютника 1998 года, Хелена не сошлась во взглядах на дальнейшее развитие музыкального стиля группы с Ронни Торссеном, лидером «Trail of Tears» и ушла из группы. Короткое участие в «Sahara Dust» окончательно утвердило её в мысли создать собственную группу, где она сама сможет задавать направление развития.
Примечательно, что она специально переехала из Норвегии в Голландию, чтобы собрать группу «Imperia». Первый релиз группы Imperia состоялся весной 2004 года на Black Lotus Records. За первые семь лет существования группа выпустила три студийных альбома. источник
