An intoxicating blend of Beatlesque vocal harmonies, introspective lyrics, and genre-skipping music gained the band a solid cult following since its first release in 1988, but the group never truly broke through to mainstream success. All of their best-known tracks are included here, such as the early-'90s MTV favorites "It's Love," "Black Flag," and "Dogman," as well as such key tracks as "Summerland," "Looking for Love," "Goldilox," and "King." Also included are three previously unreleased studio tracks — "Sally," "April Showers," and "Lover" — as well as a ten-minute live version of "Over My Head" recorded at Woodstock II in 1994. Although some of their better album cuts ("We Are Finding Who We Are," "Not Just for the Dead," "Fool You," etc.) could have replaced such selections as "Mr. Wilson" and "Lost in Germany," Best of King's X is still a superb compilation of one of the most underrated hard rock acts of all time. If you were to buy only one King's X album, this would be the one — but you'd still be missing out on some fantastic music by not checking out such full-lengths as Gretchen Goes to Nebraska and Faith Hope Love. Nonetheless, Best of King's X is an essential purchase for fans of expertly crafted and challenging rock.

В результате на свет появился одноименный дебютный альбом. Команде был предложен контракт на запись, с условием, что парни переберутся в техасский город Хьюстон. Когда музыканты прибыли на новое место их там ждал облом.
Но плюнув на это они продолжили работу. Однажды команде довелось познакомиться с продюсером "ZZ top" Сэмом Тейлором и тот решил взять ее под свое крыло. В 1987 году он помог группе заключить контракт с нью-йоркским лейблом "Megaforce", предложив однако сменить вывеску на "King's X", что и было сделано. В 1988-м вышел дебютный лонгплей трио, "Out of the Silent Planet". Несмотря на похвалу в среде критиков, публика не знала, как воспринимать этот оригинальный многожанровый альбом и не сильно-то раскупала его. The album explores the darker side of their songwriting with mixed results, often over-compensating for the cheerfulness of its predecessor at the expense of the courageous experimentation for which the band had become known. The unprecedented aggression in the opener "The World Around Me" illustrates the band taking stock of this new challenge and fighting back, while the first single, "Black Flag," clearly displays their fresh no-nonsense approach. The excellent "Prisoner" and "Lost in Germany" are also standouts, and despite its confusing lyrics, closer "Silent Wind" manages to put a positive spin on things. Other interesting moments include the wistful "Dream in My Life" and the somber "Ooh Song," which harkens back to days past with its prog rock feel and use of space.

holds true for their ninth album. While the songs are not as
immediate as their earlier works, the arrangements on Manic
Moonlight are progressive and jazzy with clever hooks that
might require a few listens to sink in--but after that they
become irresistible. There's also more of a funk influence
here, with album opener "Believe" setting the tone with a fine
groove. "Skeptical Winds" explores the style more deeply
with touches of R&B and soul, and the heavy bass line
coupled with hard-rock crunch on "Vegetable" is truly
original. "Static" experiments with dark ambient rhythms and
odd samples, becoming a wall of metallic noise and
screaming guitars. The wonderful lush harmonies that have
been a King's X trademark are present on the melodic
"Jenna" and the dreamy, uplifting "False Alarm," which stand
strong next to the album's harder moments such as "Yeah"
and title track. It's another fine album from this very talented

Their previous release, 1996's Ear Candy, did indeed contain several superb tracks ("The Train," "Looking for Love," etc.), but was not consistently as great as such past classics Gretchen Goes to Nebraska and Dogman. Maybe their reinstated songwriting focus is due to the fact that both bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick and guitarist/vocalist Ty Tabor took time off to work on solo projects prior to the album's recording. Other reasons for the album's success could have been that it was written and produced entirely by the band (without the aid of outsiders), and the majority of the album's tracks were a collaboration by all three members. With the exception of one track, the album is one long highlight — tracks such as "Cupid," "Ocean," "Little Bit of Soul," and "Hate You" are all examples of King's X at the height of their powers. The only weak track on the album is its closer, "Walter Bela Farkas (Live Peace in New York)," which contains irritating screaming over a live band improvisation. Still, it doesn't prevent Tape Head from being one of King's X's finest, and one of the best hard rock releases of 1998.
