Being that I'm the first person here to review this, it seems that this album is obscure and totally forgotten. I never hear discussion about this band here on the archives or elsewhere and information about them is rather thin on the ground. Even the discovery of this album happened more or less by accident.
I don't regret it though, because this is one fine album. The sound is, as you might guess, early 90's Mexican death metal in the vein of Shub Niggurath or Cenotaph's debut; mid-paced to fast atmospheric death metal with slower, more doomy sections. The important difference here is the use of keyboards. Usually, I'm not a big fan of keyboards, but they are used very tastefully here, and it never feels like they are overdone or out of place. Some of the songs, like Lilith and The Evocation are almost entirely ambient, are not all that different from some of Morbid Angel's instrumental tracks and are surprisingly well done.
The band sounds very tight and professional and are clearly adept with their respective instruments. The vocals strike me as especially well done; he mostly stays with one deep growling style but it never sounds monotonous and there is a nice echoing effect present. Production is, unexpectedly for a Mexican death metal band's debut, great - everything sounds clear and heavy.
The highlight of the album is Occultus, with it's distinctive keyboard melody underneath the guitars. The songwriting is pretty consistent, although there is a slight dip in quality in the second half.
I don't really know what else to say about this. It's a shame it has been so overlooked, as it truly is an obscure gem. No doubt it has long been out of print, but if you love old-school Mexican death, hunt it down. Hell, download it if you have to. - SwampSlimer, September 15th, 2008
