Between 1984 and 1990, members of Bow Wow played in a separate project called Vow Wow.
Originally founded as Bow Wow in 1975 by Kyoji Yamamoto, Toshihiro Niimi, Mitsuhiro Saito, and Kenji Sano. They were quickly signed by Invitation Records (a division of Victor) and made their major debut the same year. By 1977, they were already opening for major acts such as Kiss and Aerosmith during their Japanese tours. Bow Wow continued to rise in popularity with their next two albums, Signal Fire and Charge, but followed them with three albums which were critical and commercial failures due to poor production and having a very unfocused musical direction. Seeing the high potential, however, Touru Yazawa took over production of the band beginning with their albums Hard Dog and Warning From Stardust, the latter of which would eventually be ranked 23rd by Rolling Stone Japan on their list of the "100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time". In 1983, they also began to tour overseas, embarking on a UK tour with Hanoi Rocks, after which Mitsuhiro Saito left the band.
Bow Wow reformed in 1995, and since the year 2000, they have continued to tour and record albums as a trio. They have also played 2 Vow Wow reunion concerts with Genki Hitomi and Rei Atsumi in 2009 and 2010. They wrote their name as Bowwow between 2000 and 2015, and since then, they have performed under the name Bow Wow G2 (referring to Kyoji and Saito, being the two only original members left). when Toshihiro Niimi left.
