There are few bands in this world that can actually achieve the perfect 'blackened death metal' sound. In fact, the only bands that spring to mind are Belphegor, Azarath's latest effort 'Blasphemer's Maledictions', and Vladimir Cochet's bands/projects (Mirrorthrone, Unholy Matrimony, and Weeping Birth), which all seem to capture that bridge sound between black and death metal. This being said, what he has done with 'A Painting Of Raven and Rape' is not only has he fused these two genres, but added in elements of technicality, progressive vocals and instrumentation, and even a little bit of deathgrind (which is seldom heard, but still present).

The songs on this album do possess quite a bit of atmosphere and unusual elements not common to black/death metal, such as keyboards and clean vocals. These elements do fit perfectly though and it does separate this album from the rest. The guitar tone is great, the vocals are exceptional, and though the drum machine can sound very fake sometimes, it does seem to suit the music perfectly.
