Mixing black and doom together is nothing new,
however, it's becoming more and more prominent
with new and generic hybrids popping up daily.
Where most bands get this formula wrong is in
the genetics of the sound. It's black metal for
a bit then it's doom metal for a bit; but never
actually an articulate amalgam. There are some
awesome exceptions to this rule, i.e. Nortt,
Flegethon, Darkflight, (early) Katatonia, etc...
These bands get it (or got, such as with Katatonia).
They understand how to blend two ideologically and
sonically polar opposites into something new and
interesting. Such is the case with Italy's incredibly
beautiful and highly original Arcana Coelestia.
