The Theory of Forms, developed by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, posits that the material world around us is only a shadow of the true, eternal reality that exists in the realm of Forms. According to this theory, everything we perceive through our senses is merely a reflection of a perfect, immutable Form. These Forms are abstract, ideal templates from which all objects and concepts in the material world derive. For example, a circle drawn on paper is an imperfect representation of the pure Form of a circle. The theory suggests that true knowledge comes from understanding these Forms rather than the objects of the sensory world, which are subject to change and decay. /bc
