/ "...A ten minute opener, with swelling synths and dramatic keyboard flourishes leading into a magnificent progressive death metal monstrosity layered with the most delightfully black metal atmospherics, ‘In Search of the Triumph Beyond (The Obsidian Overture)’ is just vast. It feels like Bal-Sagoth meets Opeth meets tech death in places, with a serpentine wandering bass slithering underneath a big Blood Incantation vibe. Ludicrously melodic solos and spacious synth sections change the pace with a flair for the dramatic, before the rampaging black metal comes soaring back across the cosmos. That is JUST ONE FUCKING TRACK. The rest of this album takes that mantle thrown down by the opener and runs with it, from the progressive (very Bal-Sagoth) interlude of ‘Introspection III’, to the spiralling majesties of ‘Shed This Erroneus Skin’ and the Emperor-meets-Scar Symmetry-meets-early 2000s Opeth of ‘Silver, Ashen Tears’. It’s an astonishingly diverse record, full of massive melodic sections, moments of almost feral black metal darkness and enough spacey prog weirdness to throw your expectations completely out the window. I wasn’t ready for the cosmic prog mid section of ‘Halcyon Memory: Dreamscapes Across the Blue’, a song that revels in its progressive tendencies in order to create something truly huge and epic. As closer ‘Becoming the Stone Iocn (Obsidian Reprise)’ brings us back full circle with the opener, we are caught in this ouroboros of spiralling cosmic savagery and beauty; an intoxicating loop to be sure..." more
