Aenima is a Portuguese dark wave, rock band formed in Almada in 1997. The name of the band is a play on the Latin word anima, meaning "soul". The band is notable for its guitar-based ambient sound and clear female vocals.
Critics quite often compare the band to Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance.
Aenima was founded by guitarist and producer Rune Eriksen (previously with Millennium) and vocalist Carmen Susana Simões (previously with Poetry of Shadows and Isiphilon). They soon added bassist Paulo, guitarist Nor and drummer Hugo to their line-up. Carmen was the band's main lyricist during her years with Aenima.
Aenima's debut LP album, Revolutions, was released in 1999 by the Symbiose label. Originally the band was signed for a two-album deal, but their record label soon went out of business, so Aenima had to look for another publisher.
The follow-up record, Never Fragile, was released by Equilibrium Music in 2002. With its 6 tracks, Never Fragile is considered to be an EP or maxi-single. It was highly praised by critics.
In 2003, Aenima released their second full-length album, Sentient, via the US-based Middle Pillar Presents label, becoming the first European act to be signed by the label.
Carmen left the band after Sentient was released. She was soon replaced with a new singer, Susana, a graduate of Lisbon Conservatory. As of 2007, the band was working on recording their new, yet-unnamed album
/ AENIMA's debut, "Revolutions", caused quite an impression on both press and fans, who were unanimous in their praise when it came to live shows as well. The band have been compared in the past to the likes of Cocteau Twins, The Gathering, The Third and the Mortal, Faith and the Muse or Dead Can Dance, and now "Never Fragile" brings forth a sharper side of AENIMA, properly seasoned after outstanding live appearances in notorious international festivals such as the M'era Luna Festival, in Germany. Although they have hardly dropped the ethereal moods of their debut album, AENIMA have improved their recipe which bridges the gap between a clever use of technological artefacts and conventional rock compositions with a skilled use of melody, groove and ambience.
"Forlorn" opens in a mournful, dirge-like manner, and gradually climbs to its zenith, with the female vocals voice rising from lament to crystal clear soprano tones. Drums and bass provide an escort in her grievous march, clad with a veil of twinkling guitars and subtle keyboard undertones, as opposed to the heavier posture found in "At the Edge of a Cliff" with its hard, distorted, guitars.
"The Light", perhaps the disc's most easily memorable track, has been used as the closing track for the band's set at the M'era Luna performances and shows AENIMA's brighter face, with an approach that seems to draw some Pop sensitivities to their dark rock, which acquires a more introspective and melancholic tone again for "Lilith".
Last but not least, "Rapture" begins in a rather celestial mood, and leads AENIMA through a slightly more synthetic path to close up "Never Fragile".

Старички американской сцены хэви-метала с девятым полноформатным альбомом будут явно приятным подарком для любителей жанра. Спустя практически 45 лет творческого пути, они стабильно выпускают достойный материал.
Сегодня на утреннюю прогулку взял этих канадцев. Они мне напомнили своих соотечественников Apriel Wine, Triumph, популярных в своё время. Von Groove и мягкий хард - рок с красивым вокалом создали настроение в утренним походе
Very, very... Очумелый альбомец. Этакий с " вкусными плюшками " от In Deep до Silent Lucidity которая заканчивается пинкфлойдовской акустикой. Люблю когда поют мужчины, такие как Роджер Уотерс или когда хочется подпевать #2. No Tomorow, #8. Take It In #3. Bye Bye Love You... Спасибо!
И если мы уже окунулись в золотую эру хард-рока 80-х вместе со шведским Confess, то имеет смысл упомянуть австралийский Catalano. Вышедший 1 мая Perfect Storm наглядно на одной полке с Metalmorphosis. Роккси Каталано из De La Cruz замутил славную команду которая обновила эру Dokken, Ratt, Def Leppard, Motley Crue для тех кто ещё слушает такую музыку))
Вчерашние мои дифирамбы канадцам однозначно лучшего альбома недели, признаюсь, были несколько поспешны т. к. в это время качались шведы и их последующее вечерние прослушивание доставило массу удовольствия на сон грядущий)) И с ново (утро) с ними. С CONFESS. Боевичок выдали шведы знатный. Открывающий Colorvision сразу улыбнул заставив вспомнить любимые напевы Оззи Осборна первой половины 80-х. А в #6. Pursuit Of The Jenny Haniver с третьей минуты гитары выдают на гора стиль Айрон Мэйден)) И баллада перед этим #5. Beat Of My Heart (короткая но задушевная) sensor альбома. Много здесь сюрпризов например: #8. Running To My Death открывается колоколом (на их протестантской кирке) и заканчивается красивыми гитарами и напевами, которые ещё шире звучат в следующей Plague Of Steel. А в Silvermalen нитью Lady In Black (Uriah Heep) 1:11 и далее есть)) Бонусом жирно в десятку 10/10 Спасибо!
Интересный альбом. Я уж не знаю что они наваяли за 20 лет, но этот юбилейный для них и дебют их команды для меня впечатлил своим разнообразием. Для определения Heavy Metal для них будет узковат в понимании этого жанра. Штрихи прогрессивного рока саксофона и скрипичных в #2. Stranger/Danger и в частности вокала Карины с оттенком альтернативы делает эту композицию самой любимой на этом альбоме. Да и Уильям Латранс прописал свой бас здесь sets the scene. Мне нравится вся тема их релиза. Или например такая накрученная #6. Epiphany, Pt.2: From Rags To Riches впрочем как и клавишные в следующей Эпифании, при выделяющих талантах каждого участника, имеют общую концептуальную тему альбома. Ещё раз отмечу не броский голос певицы который и связывает своей паутиной (как бы) красивую игру музыкантов. Однозначно лучший альбом этой недели у меня. Спасибо за ознакомление.

Siberian Thaw можно и сравнить с ранними риффами Black Sabbath... да много где здесь похожих А #5.
